About Us
Dear fellow humans,
My friends and I would like to welcome you to realelection2020.com, a unique news website that aims to change the way the general elections of the United States are reported on. On this website, you will soon be able to find a delightful mix of current news from standard media outlets and special articles curated for being factual, well-written, and honest examples of journalism. As we create them, we’ll also release special editorial content full of some of the most non-expert takes on the internet, mixed with a bit of satirical humor at times. And speaking of things that are funny, take some time now to check out our not-so-serious Twitter, @real_election. We also started a video podcast! When major events happen, like debates and primaries, expect to see a new episode published to our webpage and YouTube channel.
We believe the election this year is hugely important. Never before has there been so much at stake, both for the citizens of the United States and our peculiar system of democracy. The 2016 Presidential Election has likely changed how elections are viewed, and has put the safety and security of the vote itself in question. Never before has misinformation propagated by foreign entities transform the opinion of the populace in such a drastic way. This led to the election of a reality TV star to the most elevated position in the most powerful and influential country in the world. For better or for worse.
As I type this over the course of a few days, a lot has happened in the world, both in politics and the election. We quickly came to realize that we’re probably way in over our heads with this project. We’re simply not journalists with a formal education and experience to boot. But that’s okay. We’ll have to take our time to do things right, but I think we’ll get a better product in the end. Watching debates, impeachment hearings, and all the other exciting things going on have led us to an interesting conclusion: the modern media is really bad. Like not just maligned with a bad intent, but bad at providing news. From the complicated media infrastructure the far right has created, or the inherent biases of mainstream media, there’s a lot of misinformation given to the general populace. We have relied on this information to elect our leaders, and a lot of it has been based on poorly researched sources or things simply said straight off-the-cuff. That makes it nearly impossible to really get a clue of what’s going on. As just an example, we recently watched coverage from mainstream media of the the Iowa Caucus. Aside from the very legitimate issues that manifested themselves throughout the evening, the news coverage that we were watching was either downright biased towards a certain candidate (or rather biased towards not wanting to cover a certain democratic socialist candidate), or demonstrated a lack of understanding of the caucus process in an effort to fill airtime.
So that’s where realelection2020.com comes into the picture. We aim to clear the air on this year’s election cycle while keeping things as light as we can, despite the circumstances. We hope that you find us more entertaining than say, Anderson Cooper, which I know won’t be too hard to accomplish. We also hope you come away with a better understanding of the election process, as well as what particular candidates bring to the table. That being said, I will assert at this point that we are NOT experts, and our opinions are ours alone, and should definitely be taken with a grain of salt. So with that, happy reading, happy listening, and most of all, our government is trash.
Love,
The Team at RealElection2020.com
